long story short, i took over the domain for the company i am currently working for. DNS never worked. NETDIAG allways came back with RCODE_SERVER_FAILURE when attempting a forward lookup of the DC or authoritative DNS server. in ADDNS, i should also have the 4 folders listed under the forward lookup zone, they never appear.
the guy who originally set this up, upgraded from NT4. then never put in the proper DNS suffix. for 3 days i looked through microsoft KBarticles to eventually find my issue.
windows cant properly identify the domain as it isnt following the FQDN naming structure, ex: no existing .com or .net or .local, just the name of the domain.
killing the domain and rebuilding really is gonna be tough. a butt load of old apps that run their billing and estimation.
what i would like to do is bring up a second DC and transfer over as much as i can to pull the load off of the single DC. it really is nice hardware wise:
quad xeon@2.4, 2gigs of mem, raid5 SCSI array. it simply runs like ass, 386 style. im thinking that its because of the upgrade from NT4. the upgrade process is a bit hokey when you install nt4 and then upgrade to 2k after changing the role to PDC of the domain.
so anyway, does anyone out there have a bit of direction to add a DNS suffix to the existing domain {dont think its possible}?????
thanx in advance for the help
AJ

you could also start afresh with a new domain and migrate users over...

or upgrade to w2k3 and then use the domain renaming function.

neither are simple solutions though.

the registry hack is kind of a work around and not really proper when considering things like exchange and outside mail.
think ill just rebuild the domain. just get the new server ready to go, stack user and computer accounts and transfer the user settings over with roaming profiles when im ready. bummer when you got to clean up someone elses mess.
oh ya, there is this thing called proffessionalism and accountability for ones actions.
when i called the old admin he totally cursed me out over this. that guy is a jerk!!
any way, thanks you guys. its good to have a place like this to get the strait info from guys who work in the field and know what they are talking about!!!!
all of you here ROCK!!!!!!
thanks again
