Okay, I'm troubleshooting a 5-computer network connected to a server, XP all around. Everything on the network works fine except for this one directory on the server that contains roughly 30,000 files - there is a roughly 90 second lag between opening this directory and being able to see the files in it. I've tried adding IPX and NetBEUI protocols to the mix with 0 effectiveness, sadly the client's not interested in chopping the directory up into smaller ones.

Any thoughts?

Oh, P.S. - on one out of the five computers, it works fine, no lag at all. Can't figure out what's different about that one, and it's physically the farthest from the server so... w00t.

No one has any ideas, or you need more info?

I think that you will have better luck posting this on the Microsoft: Windows XP Pro forum than here. It really doesn't sound like an IP issue to me, more a Windows XP configuration issue.

Had a similiar problem a month ago.
Something was wrong with file associations on three machines, sometimes particular directories would list after 20 minutes, other times no, sometimes a freeze... ran an old copy of Microsoft Regclean.exe, worked fine after that.

Okay, I posted it to the XP forum.

Techome, I looked up some stuff about regclean and it says it's not normally compatible with XP, did you use it on XP for your problem?

yes, on XP and Win 2003 server, multiple times. There is a backout file if needed, though I have never had a problem.. regclean is very conservative reg cleaner.
