Simple way to fill

A Symbol. I know I can use the pen tool and outline it but I was wondering if there was a more simple way to fill in the sysmbol.

I am trying to fill a rectangle in with black so I can put some white text over it.

Select the rectangle then click the fill option in your swatch window then select the color you want.

I did that and all it changes is the outline of the rectangle.

In your swatch pallette, at the upper left, you have two small boxes, one overlapping the other. the lower right box with the outline is for your outline colors, the upper left box, the solid one is for your fills. Click on the solid box then select your object and click on the color you want in your swatch pallette.
