Hey there folks--

I have a new Win2k server install and a bunch of old workstations that weren't kept-up very well... some are new WinXP Pro's with no AV software, others are Win98's with expired versions of NAV. I've basically accepted the fact that I'll have to go to each Win98 machine and uninstall the old NAV, so I'm basically wondering about the machines with no AV aoftware (unless someone can suggest something better for the 98's....).

We have a copy of NAV 8.0 Corporate Edition, and I've been reading through the manuals about NT Client install and unattended installations, but I can't for the life of me get it to work! I can't see anything in the client list and Discovery doesn't seem to do anything. Basically, all I have right now is virus-protection on the server and a useless password-protected snap-in. I haven't found anything useful in the manuals from the install disk, so I'm wondering if there's something better? A walk-thru of installing the server and automating client installs? And the internal LiveUpdate feature sounds neat as well, but again, no clue!

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

If you have the SSCC console installed then you can push out installs to the XP machines from it. From the console select NT install, it will then come up with a list on computers on your network and a parent server to choose. Select the server and then the clients you want to install to. Then you should be able to push out the install to the XP machines remotely. As for the 98 machines you will have todo it the slow way or create some sort of login script. But i would recommend upgrading them to XP means you will have more control over them in a domain enviroment.

Thanks for the reply.. I've gone into the SSC and into NT Client Install, but no clients are shown in the Available Computers list (just the server). Where am I going wrong?

Hmm strange, im not sure what your doing wrong, you can only do remote installs to nt based systems though so i dont think the 98 clients would show up anyway. I dont have the SSC to hand at the moment to take a look, im trying to remember.

Can you make sure its not a network configuration problem and you can ping the work stations from the server.

As far as im aware it should see the work stations.

Are you working with Hosts-file?
is the server named in it??

yes, then put the grc.dat file from the server (connect to the server, shared folder is VPHOME, it´s a standard share, created by the SAV)
and put it on your local pc in the following folder

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5

stop and start the sav service on the local machine
then you shoul see the computer in the sscc

sorry for my english,

If you are not seeing any servers in the NT Client install list then something is up with the master browser or you are having DNS issues. A way around this is to use the import method. Select the NAV manager in the right pane then select import and import a alist of IP that you want to install SAV on > then select finish.

Good luck

Ok, I finally got back to this problem.

I tried this import method with just one IP address in the file. The Selection Summary came up and said the machine "will be become a client once authenticated." I click ok from there and nothing happens - the machine isn't listed in the Available Computers on the left. When I check the error log (NAVCECLN.TXT), I find the following message:

Unable to detect the standard network share, ADMIN$, on <192.168.1.140>. The network path was not found. It will not be possible to install Symantec AntiVirus client software on this machine until the machine is available and ADMIN$ network share is accessible.

Where is the ADMIN$ share supposed to be? I have an ADMIN$ share on the server, but that's the system root and I can't change permissions on it.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Sounds like a rights issue... Is your Win2K server part of the same domain as the XP clients? It requires a Windows Domain Authority to use the ADMIN$ share.

We run a Novell Domain and can't push installs via ADMIN$ unless the user has Admin rights.

I also have the same problem.. How do I grant the Admin rights for my client machines? I can view both Symantec Server on the same network as my client workstations. However, I am not able to install through network.

One way to work around is that there is a share folder under Symantec Server where there is the .exe file that client machine can use to install. However, for client workstation users who do not have Administrator rights, IT people will have a big hassle logging on as Admin in order to install the client through web-based.

I have a similar problem but not to that extent. I can see most of my machines but not all of them. Does anyone have an answer for this? Is there a file missing ?

wow.. surprised to see this thread still going... sry I never posted my resolution.. here it is..

I figured out that file and printer sharing needed to be installed (at least for 2000/XP).. apparently, the install needs access to the administrative share (C$) to do its thing. Once I turned on F&PS, the client install went thru just fine.

an extra 02¢ here

I ran into a similar problem this morning finding that NAV 9.0 could not find the ADMIN$ share to install to a notebook I had just redone in a remote office. I had been having problems with the system logging in because of Zone Alarm so had removed that from this XP Pro SP2 notebook. The fix turned out to be disabling the Windows firewall. It apparently reactivated itself ( I had disabled it upon install ) when I removed Zone Alarm.
