hi folks,

first up, i'm pretty new at VLAN and switches and finding it quite difficult to setup.

I have:
-a HP Procurve 4108GL
-a DELL Powerconnect 6248P
-and a DELL EQAULLOGIC SAN

The setup:
The HP procurve is connected to our main netwok
172.19.0.0 255.255.0.0
The DELL is connected via fibre optic link to the HP Procurve.
The SAN is connected to the DELL switch via ethernet ports g1 and g2.
The SAN is configured with the address 172.18.0.1 255.255.0.0

Goal - I need to setup the SAN on it own subnet and isolate it from broadcast traffic on the main network.

Can anyone give me the basics on how best to achieve this?

Do i Trunk the HP and the DELL so that the DELL has its own subnet or set specific VLAN on certain port on the DELL?

Any help would be great thanks.

On the Procurve 4108,
create VLAN 18
add VLAN 18 to the uplink to the DELL 6248

On the DELL 6248
create VLAN 18
configure g1 & g2 with VLAN 18 as "untagged"

Also, on whatever your layer3 device is, you will need to:
create VLAN 18
configure a VLAN 18 interface with 172.18.0.? 255.255.0.0
trunk VLAN 18 to the Procurve 4108

Also, I would not use the .1 address on the SAN - use .1 on the router and leave at least .2 & .3 spare - put the SAN on something else.

172.18.0.0 /16 and 172.19.0.0 /16 are already two different subnets.

But as partially Vince described you'll have to create for both subnets a vlan and use a router (or layer 3 switch) to route between the two subnets/vlans.

does that mean in this setup i cant use either the HP or the DELL switch as a layer 3 switch? must i use a seperate layer 3 switch/router?

The DELL switch can be your router. The HP 4108gl is, AFAIK, layer 2 only.
