simple SATA question

Will a 3gb SATA drive work on a 1.5gb controller? I am guessing yes.

Also, keep in mind that it's not correct to list SATA as "gb", which usually refers to data size (gigabyte). Instead, you should use Gb/s (gigabits per second) which identifies bandwidth. It might help for you to read a bit about the technology here:

Realize that 1.5 Gb/s is still plenty fast for drives running alone or in small arrays. The 3.0 Gb/s increase mainly benefits large storage arrays found in company server solutions.

oh ok, yes I knew about the gb/s I am more of a scsi guy but am thinking about building something for a friend and need to polish up my PC skills....

Yes! they are backwards compatible

definitely yes, this situation reminds me pata formats, like IDE33 and IDE66, IDE100 all of them compatible.
