Let's say I have two Ethernet interfaces on my router. One is given a 192.168.1 address and the other 192.168.2 address.

No default route or static route has been setup.

I then ping say 172.16.1.1

What does the router do? Does it just pick one interface to send the ping out on or not try at all??

You don't really give us enough info to even give an answer. Is the router running a dynamic routing protocol or static routes . Router will do nothing as there is nothing in the table to tell it where to send it if neither is setup.

You answered my question. There is nothing setup except basic ip address and no shutdown.(test lab)

I was just surprised that when I ping'd it still took 10 secs for the 5 pings to timeout. If it is not going to send the ping out at all why bother with the timeouts?

Now I can think of reasons why this might happen but at first I was surprised.

Thanks,

Bill
