I've just installed Fireworks to edit one small picture for my website. I've never used Fireworks before and I have one simple question:

How do I edit the text on the image? Fireworks recogizes the whole image as one thing, and I can't select images, text, etc. How can I simply select the text to edit it?

Thanks.

Mike..

Don't take this as Gospel, but I don't think that you can.

If you create something in Fireworks then when you save it you save it as say a gif and then a fireworks file..
the gif is uneditable (I think!) but the FW file is, and it just overwrites the original when the changes have been made.

Don't despair just yet... I could easily be wrong here... it;s just that I haven't found a way to do that either...yet!

you are right the only time an image can me edited like so is if you have the original source file. .png are fireworks source files and they store all the info for the layers in the image. if you just save an image of a website that has text in it you cannot edit the text by simply highlighting it and typing in something new. that text will always be there.

Thank you both for your help.

The original file I have is a .jpg. I've now saved a copy of it as a .png file, but still cannot seem to edit it. If it helps - here's the picture I'm trying to edit.

Thanks!

I'll bow to deecee's superior knowledge... but I think to edit a gif.. you need to have made it (ie have the original).. not just converted the file to a png

Just a suggestion mike,

Why not crop the original so you're left with the actual pic...then create a new image i.e do the boxes and text yourself.
You'll then have an editable file that has the text areas sharper and less fuzzy. It might even be smaller in bytes!

Thanks Luds. Just as you suggested I croped the original and basically build around it. Now why didn't I think of that?[spineyes]

Thanks!

Why make it simple and efficient when it can be complex and wonderful?

yes, you would have had to create the file in FW or have the source PNG. Just crop the pic and recreate the text in FW. Save a PNG copy and then slice it. You will not be able to edit it except for maybe the luminosity. Hope this helps.
