Hey guys, I recently purchased a 3com LinkSwitch 1000 to replace a 10baseT hub I have been using. Can you give me some tips on how to configure the switch for my network. Do I need to use any special cables. My equipment includes:

1.DSL Router
2.Three Workstations, Windows 98,Win2k, Linux7.1/Win2kServer dual boot
3.3Com Nics in all workstations
4.Category 5 cables from all workstations to existing hub

My goal is to use the switch instead of the hub and I've tried using it but it wasn't intuitive as far as setup. I have 24 ports and one MDIX port on the right side of the switch. How do I set this up? Thanks in advance.

One way to use this would be:
Power all down, incl switch. Connect server to MDIX port, add second NIC in server and connect router to there (so you can use all toys in Win2K like dhcp, dns, nat, vpn...) Plug workstations into switch and throw out the hub. Power on only switch and use reset button. When reset, power up all rest equipment. Now tweak the Win2K server for the second NIC, adjust for ip addressing, dns forwarding, all toys you want.

Alex
