Folks:

What is the functionality of Signaling Server? Does this work as a DHCP server for the IP Phones?

Is there a site which explains the architecture of Nortel Succession IP telephony?

Any help is highly appreciated.

Thanks.

The sig server acts as a gatekeeper for the network (assuming multiple sites connected via VOIP), as well as provides UTPS (IP terminal registration) for IP sets.

It does not provide DHCP services - that needs to be provided from a DHCP server - it can be the same DHCP server that hands out addresses to your PC's.

Nortel's site has some decent info on Succession architecture. Go to click on products, then hunt for the Succession product line.

on our site we use the cisco router (default gateway) as the dhcp server just for voip. works for us because the request for an ip address is a broadcast, since layer 3 don't like to pass the broadcast to the dhcp server and no place on this side for a dhcp relay server, network geeks set up the cisco for our dhcp source
