Testing recovery of Windows 2003 server environment. Restored all system state data to new hardware on a test network not messing with live environment. Managed to transfer all operations master roles apart from RID Master to new computer. Tried siezing the role which also failed with the following error.

C:\>ntdsutil
ntdsutil: roles
fsmo maintenance: connections
server connections: connect to server cgi.lan
Binding to cgi.lan ...
Connected to cgi.lan using credentials of locally logged on user
server connections: quit
fsmo maintenance: seize domain naming master
Attempting safe transfer of domain naming FSMO before seizure.
ldap_modify_sW error 0x34(52 (Unavailable).
Ldap extended error message is 000020AF: SvcErr: DSID-032101CF, problem 5002 (UN
AVAILABLE), data 8438

Win32 error returned is 0x20af(The requested FSMO operation failed. The current
FSMO holder could not be contacted.)
)
Depending on the error code this may indicate a connection,
ldap, or role transfer error.
Transfer of domain naming FSMO failed, proceeding with seizure ...
Server "cgi.lan" knows about 5 roles

Is there any magic way of forcing this to go?

Guys my appologies, put the wrong error code in, solved now! thanks for taking the time to view it anyway.

I have the same problem while trying to move the RID Master to the 2003 server. Any help for me?

What problem are you having? The original post in this thread wasn't very clear, you may want to spell out the issue you're seeing.
