I saw some threads about this, but none was helpfull yet - I would like to export Sidekick 98 cardfile, but the export function only exports the named fields (and not the blank ones - the ones, added by hard return in the last field). If I export to .txt file, all the added lines of the last field are missing. If I just rename the .skcard file to .csv or .xls, the data is included and can be seen, but can not be organised by fields or columns so can not be read by other programs.

How to avoid the manual copy-paste for every entry?

Dear vb345
It depends on how much you have put into those fields, if you save as a tab delimited .txt file and then import into a version of Access and define those blank fields as memo fields you can import 254 characters I believe.
Try it and get back to us here.

You may need a copy of Sidekick97 if you wish to export the memo file/Contact Log!
See the Faq pages for info on that.

Dear Jim,

I did everything as you wrote, no problem with Access import, just the empty fields (created thru hard return in the last field) do not even show up. I checked the tab delimited .txt file I created thru export - the data is missing there allready. Any idea what to do?

Apologies vb345 for not getting back to you.... Christmas, New Year and all that!
If you go to my website and contact me there, I can take a look at a small sample of your file and make suggestions.
We can continue to discuss the outcome here (without being specific about your data) as an instruction for others.

For other people's benefit, do NOT do hard returns after the field list in cardfiles as it does create problems when exporting data.
VERY VERY important!!!
If you have done that, create a new field and copy all the data in those 'Tail ends' and then paste it into the field, there is still a limit to what you can add, but if needed you can add another field and so on, until you reach the limit which is about 28 I think.
It is however a real pain in the butt doing this!

After exporting - which software do you recommend me to use afer Sidekick 98? As similar as possible of course... I love Sidekick except this anoying export problem.

To get a copy of your cardfile to me, go to my website which is the one mentioned here in the FAQ page I mentioned earlier and contact me at the email address link on that page.

Regarding a substitute for Sidekick, the best one if you are permanently connected to the Internet is the GoogleDocs/Gmail/Google Calendar App on your smart phone which is synced with your Desktop or/and your Laptop and any other web enabled computer.
BUT and it is a BIG BUT... you should start using that and gmail (redirecting all your other email addresses through Gmail) alongside Sidekick for a period until Sidekick becomes redundant! Adding your address book and docs to Google first (.csv file) etc.

The other option is Outlook, which will cope with a lot of Sidekick files and is also like Google Docs/Gmail/Google Calendar; an industry standard of sorts.

All these need to be configured and as they have not quite reached the Maturity of Sidekick in ease of use, need to be configured to your own preferences.

HTH
