Sidekick 2 for WIndows in WinXP?

First off, very fine forum, with friendly, helpful people and great posts.

I think I've gone through every post, but can't find anything here or on the Starfish support site to resolve this:

Like many of you, I'm an SKW2 lover, and having used in 3.1, 95, 98 with no problem. But when I loaded it into XP, things started to get twisted. At first, it worked fine, but then I noticed that when I typed a word into a line in calendar, a few ASCII characters appeared instead of what I had typed, the same characters no matter what letters I typed in. After I rebooted, when I typed a single letter into calendar I got a 'sorry' msg and XP shut it down.

Uninstalled, just deleting, because XP doesn't detect it and apply the Wizard, and reinstalled, and the calendar worked fine until I rebooted, then the same thing happened again. I thought that perhaps the calendar file had been corrupted, so I started a new one, but same thing happend to that. All other functions are fine. I then tried using SK99, and my old calendars worked fine in that, but I don't like the format, and had two problems in 'memos':

a)can't bring SKW2 Notefile in unless I convert into .txt files, and

b)find simply writing a note in memos very frustrating because there seems to be no wordwrap function, and it seems necessary to format each memo individually after entering it, a real pain in the neck.

I love Sidekick 2 and would prefer to keep using it, but if I have to use SK99, can someone tell me how to get memos to wordwrap.

Can anyone help? Sure would appreciate it.

Dear bobsco,
Just two suggestions:
1. have you checked the Page Setup or
2. try deleting the file sklayout.skw when sidekick is not running
(it will be recreated after sidekick is run again)

Thanks. I tried deleting the .sklayout file, which didn't do anything, then went back to the Readme.txt in Setup, and checked the contents of sidekick.ini in Windows. It was not referring to the current SKW2 folder, so I edited it, but that didn't do the job either. So, I deleted it and reinstalled the program. That did the trick.

Only remaining problem is that on bootup, I get the messages 'can't find remind.exe' . How can I get rid of that?

Spoke too soon.

Went in and removed refs to remind.exe in registry, and then removed sidekick.ini and all SKW2 files. Reinstalled the program and calendar appeared to work fine through several entries, saves, and 3 reboots, between which I added more entries to the calendar. Each time seemed fine, then I added my own calendar file, and it seemed to work fine again through several reboots. Then I typed some entries in cardfile and notes, and in calendar, and rebooted. This time, as soon as I entered a single letter, XP shut it down as it has done over and over.

I'm at a loss right now. Wonder if anyone else has encountered this?

Dear bobsco,
I think that we are going down the wrong track here with SDK2 or SDK99.
See the FAQ area of this forum as it has the links you need to download SDK98 and the Year2000 Patch for SDK98.
Most of the people on this Forum who have gone on to XP have stuck with (Or reverted to) Sidekick98 as it has all the elements they prefer one of the most important being Phone dialing from Cardfiles..
The UI is similar to SDK2 so no great changes there either.

If you start back at SDK98 and explore the process of bringing in your files from SDK2 you can then consider if you want to update to SDK99 or not.
There is some (unknown) difference in the way SDK99 deals with Calendar files compared to SDK98 as it insists on converting them to its own format and creating a backup that can still be read by SDK98

Remember to install SDK98 into WinXP as Administrator too.

I can't give very much more advice as I have not gone your road at all.
I will still do as much as I can and will keep an eye out for solutions to your problems but I think that you need to look at the route you are taking and consider whether retaining SDK2 or upgrading!! to Sidekick99 are your only options.
