sick of ftp ( kind of ) 1

What are people doing to secure user ftp (windows to 6000 or vice/versa)? Do most of you disable ftp for everyone, allow it for everyone, or control it some how? If so, how do you control it. Anyone using Samba?

I'm just trying to see what the industry is doing, because I think I ( inheritted ) am doing it wrong.

I use winscp for copies and sftp (or psftp from a Windows system). If I need to copy files regularly/automatically, I use scp with RSA authentication. This eliminates passwords and encrypts the data.

I started using it because I wanted SSH from Win2K and didn't want to wait for approval to install software on my PC (a Java application isn't really installed, it's a document that's opened by an application (the JVM) that's already installed. Gotta love semantics.). Anyway, I had intended it as a stop-gap measure while waiting for a commercial product, but I've stayed with it and extended its use to our whole IS department because it just plain works.

I normally secure a single account to allow only FTP
see my solaris FAQ faq60-2315.

this allows me to control what & where people are putting stuff. I keep a log which makes it easier to tidy up after them.

its testing the string/variable ${ETC_DIR} is not null

I've made some changes. Thanks for everyone's input.

I have done some configuring by adding /etc/ftpusers as well as turned the -d flag on for the ftpd daemon and added a syslog.conf entry for daemon.debug.
