Hi,

Just bought 2 new PCs with XP Pro on.

My old PCs (Windows 98) used to shut down completely - ie. to "it is now safe to turn off your computer" and then it would power down.

The new PCs go to "it is now safe .... (or similar words)" but it does not power down.

The IT man who set it up says that this is because it's XP. I find this hard to accept that the OS has anything to do with powering down the PC - I thought the BIOS controls the startup/shutdown process.

Please advise if I have to accept that each time the user has to press the power button for a few minutes to power down, or is there a problem which can be rectified?

Also, if the user forgets to power down, and comes back the following morning, can they press the reset button to start the PC, or does this cause any damage?

I keenly await your reply, especially before I buy more new PCs with XP on.

You will have to look in the bios settings for auto shutdown
Xp will shut them down if it can.
Real question is do you really need to shut them down?
Or just have your users log off.

Hi,

Okay, will see how I get to BIOS on this new PC.

Want users to shut down for security reasons - ie. PC is still visible on network when on and at login prompt.

My experience is that the one PC which stayed powered on all the time (for users to print to shared printer) crashes frequently and gets unreliable within a few days. So I end up shutting down and re-starting regularly anyway.

Can you assist further?

This is a bios setup prob. Enter your system bios settings and go to power options and there is a setting there that you will need to change from suspend to powerdown. It may be phrased a little diff. depending on the pc model. But this is NOT a OS prob. Hope this works for you. I had the same prob and it took me 4 days to finally figure it out. I cussed MS and Sony for days. But now all is fine. Well have fun.
