I have a Red Hat 7.3 server which boots to a command prompt. I do most of my work there, but once in a while I start XWindows. Then, I must shutdown the computer in order to stop XWindows. Is there a simple way to exit XWindows and return to the command prompt without logging out or shutting down?

ctrl-alt-f1-6 gives you alternate tty's.
You can add or remove these in /etc/inittab.

ctrl-alt-backspace will kill X.

Please read the fine manual pages:
man X, for starters.
