We have to replace our batteries for our UPS and to do this we must shut it down which will kill power to our Nortel switch. It is a CS1000M with two cores (OPT 81). What is the proper way to kill power or do we just backup and unplug the thing and hope for the best? I don’t think the thing has been turned off since it was installed so no one here knows anything about it.

There is a breaker switch in the back lower of each column. Kill the power there. I'm assuming this is an A/C powered switch with a external UPS, correct? Should be a white double type switch.

You will need to pull the lower rear pedestal cover off to see the switch. It's like 3 switches all tied together and is white.

Before you do the shutdown, Please check the Power supply of uour IPE or any shelves. If it is a DC-DC Power supply, if so your PABX is -48 battery powered. You will have maximum of 4-6 Hours backup power even you shot down the main power from your UPS.

It's best to follow the advice above to power down via the switches at the bottom of the pedestal. Don't turn off the AC power unit on each IPE shelf as it's very possible that you will end up being unable to turn it back on again.

The reason is that over time, the switch contacts can suffer if they are switched off. This has happened to me on at least two sites.

If it's working, then leave it alone!.

firebirdscrambler is 100% correct on this. Those switches on the power supplies will fail. Happened to me one night during an upgrade. Had several fail. Ended up having to hard wire around the switch until I could get replacements. My issue was on a DC switch but I wouldn't chance it on an AC switch either.

Just as a follow up the restart went with only minor issues. I just shut down it down IPE 1st, then Cores using the breakers at the back (not the breakers on the front). I had a few phones that were disabled but took me only a few minutes to track them all down and enabled them in LD 32. Thanks everyone for the advice. Now the contractor is going to switch the batteries out tomorrow and then I get to do this all over again. Rough steps I took are below.

1. Shutdown IPEs using back breaker.
2. Shutdown cores using back breakers.
3. Shutdown power to switch.
4. Powered switch back up in reverse order (IPEs, Cores)
5. Stated trunks, phones, etc...
6. Went home.
7. Went to sleep.

Thanks again for all the advice.
