Ok, is there a option to make the computer shutdown, TOTALLY,say after 30 mins?

In the POWER options, it only wants to hibernate, or turn of harddisks, or turn off the monitor, not good enough,

is there a option to turn the computer off with a time limit...

because if you're not using a computer it's better to have it turned off right? :)

There are many schools of thought on the computer on 24/7 vs. computer off when not using it. My personal opinion is home PC's get turned on in the evening and off at night (one power cycle a day) and corporate (domain) computers are on 24/7.

As for the power management options ... what do you have against Hibernate. The power is completely off when a PC hibernates. As long as you do a full reboot once in while, it works well.

If your REALLY prone on doing this, you can get this little software called SHUTDOWN.EXE, create yourself a batch file to have the computer shutdown.

Then, create a schedualed task that runs the batch file every 2 hours (for example), but, in the Advanced Settings, and the Idle Time section, turn on the "Only start the task if the computer has been idel for at least: XX minutes.

Set the amount of time that the computer must be idle before it runs the batch file.

Example: Set the task to run the batchfile ever 2 hours, then set idle time for 90 minutes. The computer should turn itself off after 3 1/2 hours. Don't put more idle time then the next schedualed task or it will never be idle long enough to run it :)

It needs testing, of course, but theoretically, this should work.

"In space, nobody can hear you click..."

The Windows Task Scheduler has the ability to monitor idle time (It is set with the "Settings" tab).

XP natively includes a shutdown utility (actually it natively includes two shutdown.exe and tsshutdnwn.exe)

Use notepad to create a .cmd file, off.cmd:
shutdown -s -f

Then use the Task Scheduler to have this run at any idle duration you specify.

bcastnet i cant find the part where you choose the idle time..in the task scheduler

Create the .cmd file, the point the Task Scheduler to it.

The right-click the task you have created, Properties, Settings tab.

I have no idea why this two-part step is often required, but it is.
