First time this has happened. When booting computer all is well right up till it starts to boot Windows Vista. Can't even get to safe mode before it shuts down. Machine was on when I went to bed and this morning it was off. There were no power outages, besides I have an APC. I'm at a loss since I can't get into it. Wiil follow up on any suggestions.

Thank you for all the help. Really all I did was lay it on it's side and blow it out. Worked fine then. I stood it back up and again it followed the same pattern. Now it stays running on it's side. Something must be loose but I don't see it.

Possibly a short, worth taking it apart and putting it back together when you get a free hour.

Uggg! that would drive me nuts...I would be pulling everything out and spending hours looking for the problem

hope you find it because the side thing is a temp fix

This problem had me goin'. What I found was the locking tooth on the side of the CPU socket that holds the clamp down was broke off. This explains why it only works laying flat. I'm surprised it's working normally. I sure don't want to have to buy another motherboard. Where might I find just the CPU socket? I've no luck finding one so far.

what you can do is call asus and see if they will RMA the MB and that will fix your issue. can't hurt to try

I called ASUS and they sent me a new part, free of charge. Thanks for the clue.
