shutdown normal not working

hi,
I am trying to shutdown the database with normal shutdown option but i am unable to shutdown the database with any of the option except abort.Can anybody suggest me what could be the reasion for this as i am unable to perform cold backup i m running oracle 8i on top of sco unixware.I have checked in v$session and no user connected.

It may be some batch job, submited via dbms_job package. Regards, Dima
