Hello, I'm in Kenya and we have frequent power-black-outs. I'm out of the office most of the time, but some emails with attachments trigger printing.

I have a smart UPS, APC SC1500 and am using a software called APCUPSD to notify all computers on the network on power-status. Using that software means I need only 1 smart UPS, rest can be dumb.

All computers shutdown at their set timings, the only remaining machine to shut down is my HP Officejet Pro 8500.

But how?

One way that should work: Set up the HP as the attached printer to one of the computers. When the computer executes a shutdown, it will/should tell the printer to shut itself down.

Mike,
thanks for the suggestion, but I bought a network printer to ensure it operates independently, your suggestion would mean the connected computer needs to be on to enable other users to print...

No, don't share the printer through the computer.

The computer is only there to signal shutdown, e.g. via USB.

Mike, will do that for a start, however, it still means that if that machine is down for whatever reason my printer will not get the alert...

You can get nearly there by setting up the printer to go into sleep mode very soon after you use it. That way, chances are that the printer will be in the appropriate state when the power goes out.
