I installed 2000pro on a compaq 5635 presario. Now when I shut down I get the message it is now safe to turn off your computer. I then have to manualy shut it off, Before it would shut down on it's own. Any Ideas?
A recent suggestion on this site has helped quite a bit, particularly with the shutdown issue. I know the original description on its face does not sound promising, but trust me this can help a great deal:
Is Windows installing itself without ACPI support? I had this problem on an HP Kayak system, which was made in late 1998. If your computer is from around the same time period it might be the same problem. My system can shut itself off under Win98 but not in Win2k. I believe this article explained why.
I found my system on the "bad BIOS list". But if your BIOS isn't listed at all, its possible your ACPI might be disabled only because the BIOS date is older than 1/1/99. If so, it might actually work if you hack the file described in that article. You'd be taking a chance though. I decided to live with shutting it off the hard way.
As described in the article Rhombus posted, I just checked my device manager and didn't find either of the hidden devices mentioned in that article, so I wasn't able to try that.
