I think this has been brought up before, but I felt it needed a thread of its own. Has anyone else noticed that words with 'st' in them are increasingly pronounced as if they contain 'sht'? "Shtudent", "shtrong" and "shtupid" are ones I have recently noticed.

Are they? If that's the case, at least in the UK, it could be down to the popular Grolsh lager advertisement with the Dutch chappie saying 'shtop' in various situations. Poschibly?

I haven't seen that advert. Maybe if I do I will also be converted. I hope not though, as it really winds me up!

This is something typically German.
Perhaps a side effect after too much German beer? [cheers]

I don't think it would annoy me if a German did it - after all, a lot of their words begin with "Sch-" don't they? So it would just be a part of their accent. I heard a long time ago, and could be totally wrong, that actors do this, as the 's' sound can be quite harsh, and I wondered if this was why it was catching on. Or have I confused that with something else?

That is very well possible. (I think Sean Connery practises this pronunciation quite audibly)

Perhaps it is also just some kind of trying to sound extravagant - trying to give your language the extra bit.
If you don't speak Oxford English with the rolling rr, perhaps some shtrainsh pronunciation of st...
:)

The German st -> sht conversion has nothing to do with words spelled "sch..." but the fact that the st spelling is actually pronounced that way.

Stuttgart is properly pronounced "shtoot-gart"
spiel is "shpeel"
etc.
