I have been asked to redesign a site that uses shtml. I have used server side scripting before, but not shtml. What are the benefits of using? I googled on this topic; it looks like it is easier to make changes and has the functionality of frames, but there can be a performance hit. Any comments?

SHTML lets you include other files into your webpage before it gets sent to the user's browser.
The advantage, therefore, is that you can maintain a single file for say navigation elements. If you include this file within each page of your site then you only ever need to update the one file if the navigation changes.

Performance wise I dont think it's going to cause you too much of a problem. It will obviously use more server resources as the server is putting the page together before sending it.
I wouldn't worry about it though, I doubt you will even notice.
