.shtml question and advice

I'm using Visual Interdev as my development tool, and using SSI for my navbar, as you may have noticed in previous posts. I see that vi doesn't understand the .shtml extension needed to use SSI in .html pages, and I'm wondering if there's something I should know about differences in functionality between .html and .shtml
