Shrinking(?) Fields and underlining data

1.) I am doing an Appeal Letter in Crystal (8.5) and depending upon what type of appeal it is, there is a paragraph that shows or doesn't show. It is about 5 - 6 lines long. When the paragraph field is null/blank, I end up with a pretty large gap of white space on my report before there is data again. I had to make the text box 6 lines "high" or else the data under it would overwrite it.

Is there away to shrink the text box if it is empty so as to eliminate white space on the report?

2.) I have a data field coming from a query that I choose as underlined, but it does not show up as underlined in design or preview. Any clue as to why?

TIA!
Craig

The better way to eliminate overlaps is to split the section so that the "growing" object is at the bottom of a subsection. That way you can make the object small again and let it grow when it needs to.

The underline is a puzzle, can you make it bold? Try making the object deeper, you may not be seeing the bottom. Ken Hamady

Hi, Ken. Thanks for the info. I split up my detail section into many sections and it seems better now. I had to change my query to turn empty strings into NULLS or else it would not see the data as empty and therefore not suppress the section. But that was easy enough.

Regarding my fields not underlining, they are already bold and I have made the field deeper to make sure they weren't there. It's weird I agree. The 'U' button is pressed in when those fields have focus, but it's just not showing up. I had originally done this report in 8.0 and just upgraded to 8.5 and it's doing the same thing...

Thanks again!

Craig

Try turning it off and back on?
Does the underline work on other fields?
What is the data type of the fields that don't work?
Is there a condition on the underline property on the Font Tab of the "format - field" window? Ken Hamady

Hi-

Tried turning it off and back on. The underline does NOT work on any field that is coming from a database/query. Works find on text boxes.

There are no conditions on the underline property. I am clueless...

Oh well...

That is really odd. It works fine for me on both fields and text. Lets see how far we have to go:

If you use a different font?
If you delete and re-add the field?
If you start a new (simple) report with just that field?
If you are on a different PC? Ken Hamady

It was a PEBCAK.
(Problem Exists Between Chair And Keyboard)

There was a field that was overwriting it from the bottom.

If you need me, I'll be the one in the corner wearing the dunce cap...

Thanks for all your suggestions.
