Hi All

I have just got a 2nd comp that is running server 2003 and want to network with my current XP Pro.
But I've plugged in the ethernet cable and it still states:
'A Network Cable is Unplugged'
on both comps.
This may be something exceptionally simple that I've missed but I've searched thru several sources and, as far as I've found, you just need to plug it in and then set up the Network Wizard.
Could be a dodgy cable I s'pose, but if there is another answer before I make the trek to get another, I would like to hear it.

Thanks

Colin

How do you have the cables connected?
Is this through a switch or direct connection?
Where did you get the cables?
What is the order of wire colors in the plugs on your cables?

We need this information to be able to give an intelligent answer.

If you know for sure the Ethernet cables and ports are good, you can try this in Dos. File run cmd. Ipconfig/all. This should show if you are getting an ip address. You can also try “ipconfig/release”. Then do a “ipconfig/renew”. We have to do this sometimes to bring up new machines. If you are not getting anything, start troubleshooting your network cabling, Ethernet adaptor card, patch cables.

If you are connecting both machines directly without the use of a hub/switch, ensure the cable you are using is a Crossover cable.

The quick way to tell is to look at both ends of the cable, if the wires are in the same order it is not a Crossover cable.

How do you have the cables connected?
Direct between the two computers

Is this through a switch or direct connection?
Direct

Where did you get the cables?
Ebay. Belkin FastCat5e, RJ45 male/male 350mhz
What is the order of wire colors in the plugs on your cables?
Orange, Orange Green, blue, blue, green, brown, brown seen from the non-clip side.

Thanks

I don’t believe you are going to be able to hook it up like you have it. You will need another cable ran to the switch and to your computer. This will allow you to access your new computer from the network.

OK, it's not a crossover cable. I will now order a crossover cable.

Thanks for all your help. I knew it'd be something simple.

if you are cabled with jacks and then patch cords you can rewire one jack so that one is 568a and one is 568b then straight thru cables will work
