I am using CR10

I am designing a letter whereby I want to show companies and their bank accounts. Accounts are in detail section and I use this just to generate a total by company, so company is shown at group level. No problem, easy

however it then lists a a nasty looking 3 page letter list. I want to show it in 4 columns:

company no of accounts company no of accounts

rather than:

company no of accounts

Mmmmm how do I do this to split them up nicely presented. No idea

Go into the section expert. Highlight Details and check "Format with multiple columns. This exposes a new table for multi-column layouts. Set the column width to be just under half the width of your printable area (like 3.5 inches). I would go across then down but you can play with the settings to get what you want.

Hi, this is a great tip that I have never used before in about 10 years! however the problem is that my data lies at the group1 level, the detail is supressed. So I need somehow to put the group data in the detail!

There is an option to include groups in the flow, but that can get tricky if you have multiple groups.

Or you can use the first detail in each group to be a 'fake' group header. To find the first detail of each group you create a running total that counts the details of each group and resets on change of that group. Then suppress any detail with a running total value that is greater than 1.

Now you can use the details section but it will behave like a group header.

All working good. At the moment I am just working with detail as per your first note. However it does do a realy strange thing

On first page listing it works fine ie

1 5
2 6
3 7
4 8

but then when I have a realy long list then the second page does not split into 2 columns, it just carries on:

9
10
11
12
13
14
etc

weird, how can I solve this?

Does the single column get to the bottom of the page? I don't think it will start a new column until it does, at least not with "down then across"

Not sure how I can tell if has reached the bottom of page, there are certaily a lot of records on page 2 in the first column and none in the second. I was thinking this process had the inteligence to divide the data neatly into 2. I will try accross then down, although not strictly the corect order if this works it would certainly look better!

otherwise you have produced a very useful tip i have never used before, thanks!
