printconf shows:
CPU Type: 64-bit
Kernel Type: 32-bit

what steps do I need to upgrade the kernel to 64'bit?
is it worth the trouble?

Look on IBM's website that shows how to relink the kernel.

First find out if there's a reason that your kernel is still set to 32bit. Some older kernel extensions are 32bit and this may prohibit upgrading to 64bit.

If you want/need to run apps in a large memory environment, it may be necessary to upgrade to 64bit kernel.
