I want to ask the Apache community here whether you'd endorse splitting the Apache forum here between Windows users and Linux/Unix/Everybody else users?

Why? (disclosure: I favor the linux platform)

I find that a large number of posts in this forum are for Windows-specific issues/packages/quirks that are not directly Apache related... How do I install... How do I add service... many others.

Would the Windows community - being large and distinct - benefit from having their own home to deal with the uniquenesses of that platform?

I don't offer this suggestion in the typical "windows people go away" tone that some *nix folks have used elsehwere in the past.

Rather, I suggest it as a way to ensure that Win/Apache users can get the right kind of support. I've answered with linux-based answers too many times for a Windows-based question. I'd like that Win person to get the right help the first time by asking their question in a forum that focusses properly on their interest.

Hi

I see only one problem : many times the OPs does not tell us what operating system they use. But I do not think that can not be solved by splitting the forum. We will have two forums with many threads where the OP is just directed to the other forum.

Indeed is frustrating to find out after a couple of answers posted that you talk about other operating system. But my opinion is no, the Apache forum should not be split. As the Apache Foundation wrote one HTTPD documentation which applies to all operating systems, I think we better keep our activity that way.

Anyway, the amount of questions posted here does not require splitting the community and the MVPs. Personally I am interested in any question ( and of course your valuable answers ) regardless the operating system. And I would prefer to read them all in the one and only Apache web server forum.

By splitting the forum would make the people ( those who cares ) to search for answers in old threads and FAQs in two forums.

Everybody preparing to post a question, please read the How To Ask Questions The Smart Way. Improves the efficiency of our activity.

Feherke.

The folk in the PHP forum have learned to ask about the platform when an answer might be affected by it, and I don't see that PHP folk are any smarter than Apache folk, so I figure the Apache folk could be aware of platform-specific advice and ask the appropriate questions before answering, too.

I'm also worried about those right-thinking people who actually bother to look for answers already in the fora threads before asking for themselves. Where does a person with a mod_rewrite question look? Where does such a person post his question?

I think the Apache community is best served staying with one forum.
