Yes, its me again! I hope I'm not too much of a pain.
I mainly use my G3 laptop for accessing the internet. Up til now I've had no problems. Today though, I've switched to an ISP that gives me unlimited access for a fixed fee. (I'm in the UK).
But now I'm having problems because the connection keeps geting lost. (This didn't happen before). Their "help" desk tells me that its because I'm running system 8.1 on the G3 and they say they can't offer support on such an old system!
I also have a G4 (with system 9) and the connection is stable on this machine. I can't upgrade the system software on the G3 laptop from the G4 system CD.
Will upgrading the system software on the laptop be the answer - and if so, what do I need and where do I get it from?
Many thanks to you all in advance.

I would upgrade to 8.6, this is as far as I would go and the minimum for most ISP's will support. If you go to 9 or above you would be looking at putting in more memory. If you can't fix it in 20 call someone who can.

Most ISP tech staff don't know Macs at all so they are clutching at straws as to the age of your system.

Depending on the G3 laptop you have as to whether it is the original 250 series 1 or whether it is a later model, you may be safe going to version 9. You'll need at least 128MB RAM and I know all the G3 laptops will take at least 256 if you have the cash.

If you have just switched to AOL, sell your laptop and buy a pen and paper. It'll be quicker...

I agree with the suggestion of moving to 8.6. Newer versions of Open transport may help your problem. I"d also double check apple's support site to see if there are any updates for your modem. I had a similar problem with my Yosemite G3 that was fixed by a rom update.
Best of luck

Later "Wallstreet" G3 PowerBooks can take a Modem Update 2.0 software fix to improve modem reliability. it is free at Apple's Site The one thing you can't give for your heart's desire is your heart. - Lois McMaster Bujold
