Does anyone know how to make a shortcut that will open a .log file in notepad? I don't want all log files to open in notepad, so I don't want to change the file associations.

Sure.

Create a shortcut within your SendTo folder that opens Notepad.

1) Right click on start button, select Explorer. This will take you deep into your current login profile.
2) Find SendTo folder, (probably just above your StartMenu folder) open it, then create a shortcut to Notepad. (Easiest way is to just type NOTEPAD instead of trying to browse to it.)

Now whenever you need to edit a file in Notepad, regardless of extension or default associations, right click on the file, and send it to Notepad. Works great. :)

Ok. I know that way. That is ok, but I would really prefer to just if a shortcut if anybody knew one. Thanks though.

Since you don't want to change the file associations and the .log files may reside in many places on a disk . . . and you would prefer something other than the SendTo technique . . . I don't know what else to tell you.

Well, the send to way only works if you use it on the .log file. Send to does not work if you tell it to send a shortcut to notpad.exe.

If you wish to create a shortcut that will open the same .log file, located in the same place each time . . .

1) Create a shortcut to Notepad.
2) Right click and edit properties.
3) In the target cell, add a space and then the complete path and filename to the .log file you wish to edit or view.
4) That's about it. Now double clicking the shortcut will bring up the desired .log file every time.

Is this closer to what you requested?

yeah, thats what i was looking for. i knew it was something like that, i had it backwards.
