When I create a shortcut to an existing database and run it, my computer shuts down to a black screen with a flashing cursor. However, I can open the database no problem by going through access itself. I can't right click on the file and select properties or it does the same thing. I'm puzzled.

I am running Win98 and Access 97.

It sounds as if your Windows association for Microsoft Access Database is incorrect. But, before you do anything drastic, you should make sure the problem survives a shut down and restart. If there is someone at your site that maintains your Office 97 installation you should refer this problem to them. Otherwise:

You can look at the association by opening any Window in the Windows File Explorer (for instance double click on My Computer).

Select Options on the View menu. Next select the File Types tab and look for the entry for Microsoft Access Databases. Select it and click the Edit button.

From the Edit dialog select the action "open" and click yet another Edit button.

The field labled "Application Used to Perform Action" should contain something like:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\MSACCESS.EXE /NOSTARTUP "%1"

Obviously the path "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office" will be replaced by path in which Office 97 was installed on your system.

If you have something else here, it is your problem. Try this: Click the browse button and direct the dialog until you can select Msaccess.exe. Once this is in the field with the full path the Msaccess you can go to the end of the filed and insert: /NOSTARTUP "%1".

If this won't work, I think you need to reinstall Office 97. If that doewn't work, the Microsoft has a support utility which will clear Office out of your registry after you uninstall it (Called Office Clean or something like it).
Don't forget to reapply any service packs after you do this.

Or maybe you don't need the association all that badly.

Best,

Harry Rich
