A year or so ago a freind gave me a registry entry to import that changed IE so that when you would enter "Q 874789" in the address bar it would automatically take you to the 874789 article for microsoft. Does anyone know of this or can anyone steer me into the right direction to create this key again?

No idea - try asking your friend again.
Personally, I'd just visit and put the Q number in their search box.
