All of a sudden, when I click on an excel spreadsheet shortcut or direct icon I get the following error message: 'A required .DLL file, MS097.DLL, was not found'. I can open excel and then open the spreadsheet, but I can't open it by clicking on the icon or on a shortcut to it. Shortcuts/icons for other programs work properly. I can't 'FIND' MS097.DLL on this computer or on another Windows 95 machine we have.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. - Ham Rutledge

Make sure the filename ext is XLS It sounds like you might be using a addin that is not registered with file types
If it is not .XLS Then go to Windows Explorer, View, File types, and register the new Ext to Excell

I eventually realized the missing file was MSO97 (O as in Office, not 0 as in my IQ at the moment). I copied that file over, and then somethng else was missing. I gave up and reinstalled Excel, and now things seem to work. One worrysome aspect of all this is that I did get 3 'Set up encountered a problem with the registry' messages during the process. Of course, it didn't say what it did - if anything - about it. But, things do seem to work properly.
