ShoreTel IP230 Password Issues & Test Switch Configuration

So I got a shipment of IP230 phones in along with some Shoretel switches. When I worked on the Nortel 1120/1140 phones I had to update the firmware from SIP to Unistim before any of the default factory reset and other functions worked properly. With the ShoreTel 230's I can't seem to get passed the initial password. I have attempted all of the MUTE CODES and every time I go to enter the default passcode of (1234#) it always reverts back to the previous screen.

I'm working on putting the system together that came in with the phones, but I seem to be missing the actual server that had ShoreWare Director on it. I have a ShoreTel server with ShoreWare Director on it, but the configurations are different and without being able to enter the setup in the actual phone how am I supposed to get the phone to connect to the server?

Questions:

1. Are these phones locked in such a way that they will only connect to the original server?

2. Is there a way to get these phones back to factory defaults without knowing the password?

3. Is it possible that the previous owner of the phones messed with the firmware or something?

4. I have ShoreWare Director 6.1. How do I get an updated version of ShoreWare Director?

And Finally.. 5. I am setting up a test system in my warehouse. Do I need to purchase extension licenses in order to set up phones and test their functionality and is there firmware that possibly may need to be updated in the phones?

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

1. The phones should be able to sync to your server. Do you have a Voice VLAN setup to obtain the DCHP?
2. Have you tried this Mute Code?
Factory Reset a Phone
[Be careful with this procedure as you can brick the phone if done incorrectly.]

1. Hit Mute + RRAMOS (772667) + #
2. Wait for "Factory Test KPD Mode" to be displayed .*If prompted for password, you to enter 1234 as the password before reset.
3. Hit Mute + CLEAR (25327) + #
4. Wait for "Factory Test KPD Mode" to be displayed again.
5. Power-cycle the phone.

This will completely reset the phone to factory defaults, also wiping the currently installed firmware.

3. The system should automatically download the firmware after it connects to the FTP server.
4. You are a bit behind.... You need to have a Shoretel Maintenance Agreement to obtain the updates. I would work with a Shoretel Service Provider in your area to upgrade the system. What type of appliance servers do you have?
5. 1) You should be able to use a license for up to 45-days for evaluation. 2) Refer to Answer #2.

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for the info, but as I said in my post "I have attempted all of the MUTE CODES and every time I go to enter the default passcode of (1234#) it always reverts back to the previous screen." Also, there is no FTP server IP set in the phone, and I can not get into the setup of the phone as I do not know the password.

Thanks

Have you tried the GUI password of the User the phone is associated to?

I have no idea what that password would be. Basically I was given 100 or so phones, 16 SG50's, 3 T1's, and was given the task to learn as much as I can and see what we are able to do with these phones. The software I have is ancient... ST 6.1, getting anything more recent all the way up to 12.2 is kind of out of reach. ST 6.1 does not support the SG50 nor the IP230 phones. Arggggggg. If I had a more recent version of ShoreTel Software I should be able to get the SG50's connected, theoretically get the phones to connect to the SG50's, and use ShoreWare Director to reset the passwords in the phones or wipe the firmware and start all over new. Right?

Problem is, I don't have any contact with the customer the phones and hardware came from, and they didn't ship me the server either. I have been searching for ST 10, or 11, or 12 for a download on an evaluation basis, but have come up with nothing. Any further suggestions?

Have you reached out to shoretel? Or a Partner in your area?
