Shopping basket

Hi, being very new to php and mysql, I am not sure what the capabilities are. I am teaching myself with the help of books as I go along, and try to think of potential practical uses along the way.

My question is this - can mysql be programmed to work as a shopping cart for a website, or is it better to get a commercial product. Alternatively, are there freeware shopping carts available?

No database server can be programmed to be a shopping cart.

The programming takes place in the application software, which then uses the database by handing queries to and fetching data from the database server.
