Shifting character set when printing a PDF

I have an old document, created w/ Acrobat 4.0 (PDF version 1.3). The document displays fine, but if I print it, certain characters are occasionally changed. For example, an upper case O prints as a lower-case, superscript "a", and ampersand is printed as "C", etc. Always the same substitutions.

If I open the file in Acrobat, select the affected text, change the font, then change it back, the problem is fixed. Unfortunately, the number of pages (~200) involved makes that more time consuming than I would like.

Any thoughts on other options to fix this?

My first though was to just recreate the PDF from the original Word file (last edited in 2000), but every time I do (using Acrobat 8), the program locks up.

Got the solution on another forum. If you encounter this problem, use the PDF Optimizer to un-embed the fonts in question.
