can't you recover the .pas files from the D7 installation?

Yes, just wondered if there was some good reason why they had been removed, for example if the 'normal' Treeview, Listview etc components now have the same extended functionality?

If I remember right, they're there, but aren't installed by default. You have to open the package and install them. I'm not sure which package though. I believe it was removed because of performance - the more you have installed the more sluggish the IDE could become.
