I'm trying to use a Tungsten E with Sheet to go (v6.0) to view an Excel file with 13,000 rows (8 fields per row). We want to use it to look up dog licenses for our county animal control officers. But, when we search on the owner's name or license number, it is too darn sloooow. It takes 1 to 2 minutes to find the row, if it doesn't crash the Palm first. Does any one have any ideas to make this work?

Thanks,
Rich

The two most popular spreadsheet programs from Palm OS are SheetToGo (DataViz), and QuickSheet (QuickOffice-IGO). 13,000 rows are probably a little high for either of these two apps. If I'm not mistaken, both of them having maximum cell recommendations far lower than what you're using.

A few thoughts:
-Logically (if possible) break the database up into multiple spreadsheets.

-Eliminate as many columns as are not absolutely required

-Investigate a database solution such as HandDBase (several are available) that might:
1) Better handle the high number of records you require
2) Allow other means of storing and organizing data.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info AlphaGuy. I was able to knock down the file to 8,000 rows, but it's not much better. I will look into HandDBase, but I have a feeling we will need to look at a small laptop or LifeBook.

Do you know anything about Adobe Reader for Palm? I tried using that but the find function does not locate the owner's name or license number (and I know both are in the test file.)

Thanks again for your help,
Rich

Hey again, AlphaGuy

I just install the trial version of HanDBase and it is awesome! It only take seconds to do a search and if you tap on the result it shows the entire record on one screen. And it's only $30 a license! Thank you again for the recommendation!

Glad to here it worked out for you. We just started shipping (reselling) a wide-screen version for the AlphaSmart Dana and I think it's going to be a huge hit!

Good luck!
