Do I have this concept right?

I can access a "hidden share" - which is one denoted by a "$" by typing the \\computername\sharename convention.

as in the following example - \\yourcomputer\admin$ will usually get me to the c:\windows\winnt (on NT)
or c:\windows (on 9x) - correct?

Likewise \\yourcomputer\c$ ought to get me to the c:\ directory on yourcomputer as long as it's shared, right?

Sometimes this works between pcs on my network, and sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't, I usually get prompted with a box saying

"incorrect password or username for \\yourcomputer\c$" with two fields prompting me for "connect as" and "password"

no matter what I put into these two boxes, it never lets me connect to the the share this way.

My question is how can I make sure the \\computername\c$ is enabled in order to be accessed by other machines on the network?

scroce,
Are you using an username and password that already has rights to the share from the workstation? Or, is this workstation part of a domain. What usually works best is trying to connect as the local administrator account to the share. Try it and let us know.

All users are part of a domain called "US". I do not have full administrator rights on the domain, but that shouldn't matter should it?.

My user name is scroce. There are two computers, computer1 and computer2

user "scroce" shares the c: drive on computer 1 and grant the user "madeline" full access rights under permissions. Just for the record, "everyone" having full access rights is the default setting, and scroce also adds "madeline" as well.

From computer2, I log in as "madeline". I try to access the shared c drive by typing run> \\computer1\c$ - but then I get the previously described error.

Question is why??? User scroce made the share and gave user madeline full access.

However, from computer1 if I type \\computer2\c$, it works fine.
