Is there a place where we can access scripts that we in the Cognos community have developed? If there is not, I think it would be nice to create one because we have all scripted some things that might be really helpful to others.

Might be a good idea for a Member Moderated Forum.
Cognos Scripting Solutions?

Sure does. How does something like that get established?

I've put in a request to have a forum added. I'll keep this thread current with updates.

That would be cool because we have all done so much scripting that someone probably has already thought of something that someone else wants to do but maybe does not know how. Let's hope people are forthcoming with the scripts because this could be very valuable to many folks here and it would allow others to see the power of this tool.

Someone suggested to me that some folks might not want to share their scripts because competition within their particular industry could get the scripts and make them more efficient and productive, which might cut into their bottom line. I suppose that is possible, but how much of an impact could that really have?

Hopefully members of these forums understand the difference between "my company vs your company" and "fellow Cognos users". There will always be those individuals not willing to share their knowledge or findings, the most we can do is be as helpful and sharing as possible and hope others follow our example.

You've got that right. We have done a few things here and I was told today by Cognos that I should submit something I have done recently to SupportLink and try to get it published. I am sure many folks out here have done some outstanding things with scripting that I, and I am sure others, would like to see. Maybe some of it could be used within an organization and it would help, once again, to show the kinds of things that we can do with Cognos, and make us more productive and allow us to wrestle with real problems rather than trying to develop our own scripts.

Hi,

I think you guys have a brilliant idea.....I will also take part in this....I may not submit that much code but will definitely share ideas....as far as the compition things goes, one should remember that this is an international thing and different sectors are using these type of applications so, if your knowledge helped someone in the engineering industry while you work in the banking sector then, so what, big fat hairy deal....lets do it anyway...if we find that we are killing the global economy with this brain wave of hours and Koffie Annan gets all worked up then we can it....

I spoke with the forum moderator, and after a lengthy discussion we both feel it makes more sense to put scripting samples in a new section of the FAQ page for this forum.
I will begin writing a basic description FAQ for what should be posted in that index, and post it here for feedback.
I will also check with Griffindm to see if we want to have a separate section for Cognos Scripting vs Cognos Macros. Their the same thing but can be interpreted differently.
