I received a cd that had Illustrator files on them. Some of them were saved with eps extensions and some were not. As expected, I can open the ones with file extensions, but not the ones that do not have it. I am trying to save those troubled files to my hard drive so I can send them to someone with a mac so they could rename them with the proper extensions or so that I can rename them. But, Windows won't allow it because it cannot read the format. And as expected, Illustrator will not open them either. I cannot contact the designer to ask them to rename their files.

This is futile, huh? I would be very grateful if someone had a work around to this.

Thanks

You should be able to add file extensions to these your self. You'll first need to drag them off the CD 'cos you'll not be able to rename them on a read only disk.
Next right click and properties of each file to check that they haven’t stayed 'read only'.
Then with any folder open, click tools/folder options/view, about 10 boxes down there is 'hide extensions for known file types' - uncheck it.
You can now rename your folders, and add '.ai or .eps' You should then be able to open them on your PC.
Hope that helps.
If you're still stuck, let me know and we may be able to put them on my FTP server for me to have a look at.
All the best
James

James,
Thanks for your response.

I cannot move or copy the files off of the CD onto my hard drive because Windows doesn't recognize them. I have worked with other mac files that allowed me to add and extension to them and had success, but not these.

Thanks for your suggestions

Dont really understand the problem - If you can open the CD with your PC and see individual files, why cant you then drag them to your desktop?
Or are you saying when you open the CD only some of the files are visible?
Do you mean you cant open the CD when it's in the PC, if so there are some commercial apps around to let a PC open MAC formatted media
I did once find a share ware app, but cant remember what it was called.
This cant be unsolvable – let me know how you get on.

hi james,

I can start the CD and see many files, but Windows will not let me open , drag or save the files without extensions. I can work with or save the files that have extensions. I know the issues are stemming from the lack of file extensions, but I cannot rename the files.
I have persuaded my client to allow me to speak with the original author of the files and will ask her to rename her files. Thanks for the interest in my situation
