After adding several NT workstations it seems that there is a problem with sharing files from NT computers to Win95 computers but not vice versa. I can create the shares on the WIn95 computers, but when the NT users try to access the shared drive or folder, access is denied. Have I got a config problem or is this normal? I guess I really don't understand the difference in the way NT shares vrs. Win95.

I realize it's easy to just store the files on the server so that all users can get to them. But the nature of what we do is such that it is much more convenient for the users to share folders to each other. It would also take more resources on the server than I have available.
Are the Win95 computers backing up their data regularly? If not then you have a case for everything on the server.

Put everything on NT, set the shares and permissions as you require. Throw RAM into the server and unless you have over 500 users it will cope.

Win95 shares are for everyone, NT shares are permissions based and the share and the files inside are independently settable.
Zel
zel@zelandakh.co.uk

Yes, they back up onto CDs. These folks each generate up to a gig or more each day in user files. I don't have nearly enough drive space on the server for what they use. I'm in a situation where I inherited this problem and can't do much about it right now due to funding. The server is old and slow with about 15 gig of storage available. I can't put everything on NT. There again, it's a matter of money. I still would like to know why I cannot get access permissions from a Win95 computer when I'm on a NT computer. I can even gain access from the Win95 computers when I'm on the Macs (thanks to 3rd party software). But not from the NT computers. Any ideas?

Is the name of your win95 workgroup identical to your domain name?
Jeff
masterracker@hotmail.com

Of all the things I've lost in life, I miss my mind the most ...

Yes it is named the same. The message I get is "access is denied".

I'm only a very small portion of a very large network. There are about 3,000 computers in this domain. I have no control over the domain. I only have control of a stand alone file/print server that is joined to the domain and the E-mail server, DNS, WINS, etc. are all handled at the Network Control Center. I don't have administrator rights on the domain, just on the local server. I'm just here to keep the workstations running, and the printers printing.

Have not tried to access shares that much from Nt, but you can try some of the built in utilites with NT,95. go to command prompt with name or ip of 95 computer you want to connect to . type in nbtstat -A ip address, this should bring up a table of entries

Node IpAddress: [*.*.*.*] Scope Id: []
            NetBIOS Local Name Table

   Name Type Status
---------------------------------------------
GMSERVER10 <00> UNIQUE Registered
PRODUCT SUPPORT<00> GROUP Registered
GMSERVER10 <03> UNIQUE Registered
GMSERVER10 <20> UNIQUE Registered
TMOSES <03> UNIQUE Registered

20 means that the computer has sharing enabled, 03 shows the user logged on.
if this shows up correctely it means, the 95 host is set up correctely. next step
net view \\ip address

this will show the list of all shares on the computer

the do
net use * \\ip address\sharename
if their is a password you will have to enter it and if everything goes alright, it will map a drive to the next possible location.

This is the commmand line way to do this, i havefound using the ip address is much better than using netbios name. sometimes the netbios name does not go through etc...

if you are trying this from nt, nt has alot of neat utilites that 9x doesnot, look on my websites under documents and look at the NTwar document. it shows you how to use this stuff

good luck

moses
tmoses@iname.com
<a href= my site
"In the beginning there was HTML, and it was good"
This may be way off track, but windows 9x do not give the option of giving a name and password when connecting to an NT shared resource. If the w9x user name is not on the NT share permission list, w9x will popup a Connect As... screen, allowing only the password to be entered.

The only way I have found around this is to add the w9x user to the NT machine, and add the newly created NT user name to the share/security permissions.

hmmm... I wonder if you have the group Everyone assigned to the share, or even if this would work...
Hope this might help.

anongod@hotmail.com

"Drawing on my fine command of language, I said nothing.

THanks to all, and especially to TMOSES. I did as you said and mapped right over to it. It gave me access just as it should. I still can't figure out why I had to do it from the command line to work though. I'll work on that one later. At least we can connect now. Thanks a million!

no problem, i have found that too, alot of times what is in network neighborhood is uncorrect :). The best bet is to learn how to write batch files :) You can map the drives much easier that way, you can also try putting the net use command in a novell script when they log on, if you use novell. Or you can simply make a batch file and put it in the start up menu. glad i could help :)

moses
tmoses@iname.com
<a href= my site
"In the beginning there was HTML, and it was good"
That's exactly what I had done! I already had created shortcuts on several of these computers, so I put the batch files in the same folder. I moved the folder to the startup menu, so there you have it!

Thanks again!
