I would like to synchronize emails with Thunderbird 2.0 or other multi-platform client. I am a novice at this topic, more expert at ohers like graphics programs and wonder what approach is likely to be less of a headache. Use a mail server, like mercury mail on Go Daddy, to allow all mail sent and recieved to be available on my various computers from the mail server or I should consider some sort of synchronization software to keep my mail available and shared amongst 3-4 different computers?

My consern is that if I use the mail server approach, the second and third computer will not know that computer one has read the email. Whereas, the synchonization solution will need to support at least, OS10, W2K and XP; hopefully Linux too.

Anyone with experience please give a hint on reliable solution.

Dan;

Maybe this might help:

Define your mail accounts as IMAP. That way the mail stays on the server until YOU delete it.

I do exactly this same thing as I have two homes in different states, a work desktop and a traveling laptop. They all point to the same mail account(s) but define them as IMAP.

My mail is then "my mail" and NOT downloaded to any particular client just to read.

I do this with both Thunderbird and Evolution. I see no reason why you could not do this with Outlook as well.

Good luck and please post your results.

Bob thanks for the thoughts

I had forgotten that I had put this question up to tek-tips. I have pretty much decided to use Godaddy's managed mail product which is POP-3. I will then use each computer to download my mail, independently.

I saw a tool to synchronize mail folders for thunderbird, I do not remember what it was called, but that is approach I will be taking. Thunderbird allows you to keep mail on the server on either Imap or Pop-3 until you delete it. (check out the setup accounts section) The only bother is that you have to sit down and delete old emails off the server doing it this way.

Now I have to find the synchronization software, which was for thunderbird 1.
