My housemates and i are about to get broadband installed (1meg) and i have heard that file sharing programs like kazaa can hog alot of bandwidth. Is there something I can do, or a program we can use to ensure the bandwidth is divided equally between us. There will be 3 machines sharing the connection. Any ideas?

Thanks
Aaron

Not worth the trouble. I've seen large companies limit bandwidth on cisco routers but other then that it really wont be an issue. If you really want to make sure they dont hog all your bandwidth, just stick 10mb cards in their machines (or hard code their 100's to 10 half). That will limit their bandwidth some. See if its really a problem first then decide if you want to spilt it evenly.

Scott,

Thanks for the reply mate. I think I will see if it is an issue then decide what to do about it. I have been told that you can limit the bandwidth used in Kazaa itself so if they do that then it probably wont be a problem.

Thanks again

who are you going to use for BB? some suppliers like fr instance NTL like to put limits on use - ie 1Gb/Day - if you go over a few times they don't seem to mind, but if you always go over, then you are breaking their AUP. (Acceptable Use Policy)

most of the others are good though.

Gary,
That must be something in EU because I have never heard of that here in the US. I know a while back an ISP I once used frowned upon being online for more then 2 hours at a time.

Thanks for all the posts guys,

I was aware of the ntl situation and duly avoided them like the plague! Not only have they capped downloads but they have tried to restrict vpn use on home accounts. If you want to use vpn you have to have a business account.
