I am looking to add a new Sharepoint system, and I am looking for the most useful and reliable way to implement this.

It is a bit of a strange set up, and I want to know if it can be done.

What I want, is a single portal, with 2 seperate backend servers. One server will house pricate information, and the other will host public information. Depending on the ip space you come from (I will code this in, just think of it as login credentials) will decide what content you see. Now here is the hard part.

The servers have to be physically seperate, and the portal has to look identical to both the private and the public user, BUT, the private user will simply be able to see more content (the private stuff).

Is this possible? I am a .Net developer, so I can dig in if need be. If you need any clarification or anything pleas elet me know. I appreciate your time!
