Sharepoint v3 - Setup link to open .exe

I have tried to setup a link to open a winword.exe from the standard links web part. Unfortunatelt when i click on the link nothing happens, but when i put the link into the address bar of ie it opens up word.

The link im using is:

file:///C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\winword.exe

Can anyone please help me out with this?
