We are getting ready to upgrade from Sharepoint 03 to MOSS 2007. Our plans are to simply do a fresh install of MOSS 2007 on a new server and then move everything over rather than doing an upgrade.

My first question is rather or not this is possible and if so, can you point me in the right direction.

And secondly, do you know of any issues with doing it this way?

Thanks in advance.

I believe that is a feasible approach, but it's not something I have done.

The main things that spring to my mind are:
1. By changing server you will change the URLs for the site collections (unless you are very smart with DNS entries, web application settings and managed paths);
2. You have to migrate the content to the new server and make sure users only even update the live copy.

Because of the URL issue, I'm not sure moving the content datbases over would work. You might need to look at exporting/importing the site collections using STSADM or some suitable migration tool.

But I'm waffling now because I'm out of my depth.

The MOSS 2007 Tech Centre has a page ( on deployment and it includes a section on upgrading.

There's also the SharePoint Server 2007 Help and How-to site ( which might offer more information.
