Sharepoint Unique ID column

Hi All, using WSS, I want to have a column that creates a unique number for each document created from word and saved into sharepoint or even if you use the upload button. Is there any formula I cause to do is? Or any other idea to get a unique number generated in the column?


Had an idea where I can date time stamps and for mat it to a serial number such as 2006050423 or maybe something were it uses characters from the name column, if I can references it in a formula and add the date to the end or something


Any help well be greatly appreciated
